Anglers looking for the challenge of hooking a trout to fighting a walleye, find a haven in Lansing… Located in Northeast Iowa on the banks of the Mississippi River, Lansing offers a variety of fish and fishing adventures.
Situated at the end of Lansing’s Main Street, Mississippi’s Pool 9—at 31.3 miles long and with 35,169 acres of aquatic habitat—is home to 104 different species of fish including the highly-prized walleye, bluegill, northern pike, bass, sunfish, and crappies. Lock and dam 9, like other channel dams along the river, is easily accessible from the shoreline or by boat.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides accurate refuge maps to help you better plan your fishing adventure. In addition, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) does an excellent job of updating their fishing reports and providing useful information to anglers.
Another great place to cast your line in Allamakee County is the Yellow River State Forest. According to the DNR, the Yellow River is an ideal place to catch brook, brown, and rainbow trout. A few of the many other species include:
- Bluntnose Minnow
- Central stoneroller
- Common shiner
- Fantail darter
And if trout fishing is your aim you should also check out some of the finest coldwater trout streams anywhere: Lansing Clear Creek at Clear Creek Park (1972 South Road on the west edge of town); Wexford Creek (1416 Great River Road) and the French Creek Wildlife Area to name a few. Check with the DNR to find which area streams are stocked on a regular basis.
