Horsfall’s Lansing Variety Store

In by Andy Kelleher

Housed in a building that hints of its age is a variety store which defies contemporary retailing standards and takes you back to a by-gone era. Paul Horsfall, Jr., proprietor, developed a liking for retailling as a child when his father managed a retail store in nearby Decorah. Paul decided to make a career of retailling and looked for an opportunity in a relaxed atmosphere and found one in Lansing where his family had a summer home. In 1975 he purchased Krieger’s Variety Store, changed its name to his own and expanded. Paul likes to describe his store using a variety of cliches such as “Stock it high, watch them buy”, “here are things you didn’t know you needed” and “would you believe there are over a million items here?”
