Bringing Fiber Internet to Lansing: A Key Step Toward a Stronger Future
This week, our Economic Vitality Committee had the pleasure of meeting with Brenda Hackman from Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative to explore the many programs they offer and to discuss a topic that’s especially important to Lansing’s future: fiber internet access.
Supporting Our Region Through Cooperative Programs
Brenda shared several impactful initiatives that the cooperative is involved in, including:
-
Operation Round Up – A program that allows members to round up their electric bill to support local causes.
-
First Call Emergency Response System – Offering peace of mind to seniors and individuals with health needs.
-
Youth Scholarships, Tours & Leadership Academy – Investing in the next generation of leaders.
-
Electric Vehicle Education – Promoting innovation and clean transportation.
-
Annual Member & Family Picnic – Strengthening community ties.
-
Legislative Advocacy – Speaking up for rural communities at the state and federal level.
Each of these efforts reflects the cooperative’s commitment to building stronger, more connected communities—something we value deeply here at Main Street Lansing.
The Fiber Divide: Why It Matters for Lansing
While rural areas surrounding Lansing have seen great progress in broadband expansion, residents and businesses within the city limits continue to face serious buffering and connectivity issues. This lack of high-speed internet poses challenges not just for families streaming content or doing homework—it directly impacts local entrepreneurs, remote workers, and economic growth.
As Brenda pointed out in our meeting, the absence of fiber internet in Lansing’s city boundaries is a major infrastructure gap, and addressing it could open the door to more jobs, innovation, and long-term sustainability for our town.
